As part of a series of design workshops, this group project asked us to consider the effect of natural and artificial lighting on a gallery space. Working within the constraints of a 9m x 9m x 9m volume, a 1:20 scale model was created using MDF, greyboard and mounting board. To develop contrasting spatial experiences and atmospheres within the same volume, a tilted box was inserted into the main space. This created a variety of spatial qualities both within and outside of the box, ranging from intimate to large open spaces. The materiality of the box also became an important feature. Clad in the same material as the flooring, it gives the impression of rising from the ground.
