Design Research Unit: Digital Handwerk

Feb 2016

As Part of the MacroMicro Design Research Unit, this project investigated the implications of craft in today’s digital building culture and its connection to site, process and materiality. What effect has the increased dependence on computer-aided design and manufacturing had on the perception of craft in modern society? Is an object still ‘crafted’ if the process of making has been taken out of the maker’s hands? By examining the fundamental principles of craft, as well as examples of craft in contemporary practice, insight can be made into the process of crafting. This process is further explored through a ‘thinking machine’, which tests the capabilities of automated production processes to create unique, crafted objects from standardised components. This thinking through making is influenced by Renzo Piano’s approach to process, and the works of Gramazio & Kohler, who produce one-of-a-kind objects by using a software controlled robot. The thinking machine is tested firstly through the compilation of a catalogue of joints that can be created using laser-cut sheet material, and secondly through exploring the possibilities of a sheet material to create space enclosing forms at an architectural scale.
